Council Facts

Who We Are
Established in 1985, the Minnesota Council of Health Plans is an association of licensed nonprofit health care organizations providing coverage to more than 4.8 million individuals. Our members are all regional—accountable to the community, not shareholders. Read a bit about our early days here.

What We Do
The Council works to ensure all Minnesotans have access to affordable, high quality health care. We’re active in the areas of health care reform, community health and prevention, and health care data analysis.

Our Members
Member companies include Blue Cross Blue Shield/Blue Plus of Minnesota, HealthPartners, Medica, Hennepin Health, PreferredOne, Sanford Health Plan and UCare. Member employees are located in cities throughout the state including Aurora, Mankato, Moorhead, Rochester, Virginia, Crookston, St. Cloud, Duluth, Two Harbors, Proctor, Silver Bay and more than 70 locations in the Twin Cities.

Community Impact
Members of the council provide employment to more than 22,000 Minnesotans in communities throughout the state. In addition to employment, members provide millions of dollar in grants and other direct support to research, teaching and community service organizations. Our members pay more than $157 million each year in property and payroll taxes and unemployment insurance. As nonprofit companies, our members are recognized throughout the country for their collaborative efforts to improve the health care.
